Reminder: ETA Requirement Now in Effect for Non-European Travellers to the UK

What Non-European Travellers Need to Know About the UK's ETA Requirement
As of 8 January 2025, the UK has introduced a significant change in its entry requirements for non-European travellers. Those who previously did not require a visa must now obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the UK.
This new requirement applies to visa-exempt nationals visiting the UK for up to six months for tourism, business, or short-term study purposes. Creative workers entering the UK for up to three months under the Creative Worker visa concession must also apply for an ETA.
Key Details of the ETA Requirement
- Who Needs an ETA?
All visa-exempt non-European nationals must apply for an ETA before travelling to the UK. - Who Is Exempt?
Some categories of travellers remain exempt, including British and Irish nationals, those with UK visas or residency permits, and certain diplomatic or government officials. Additionally, Colombian nationals are no longer eligible for an ETA and must now apply for a visa to visit the UK. - How to Apply
Applications must be submitted via the UK government website or through the official UK ETA app. The process requires personal and travel details, with an application fee of £10. Decisions are typically made within three working days, but travellers should apply well in advance of their trip. - Validity and Duration
Once granted, an ETA is valid for two years or until the holder’s passport expires, whichever comes first. Each visit to the UK under an ETA can last up to six months.
Upcoming Changes for European Travellers
From 2 April 2025, the ETA requirement will extend to European travellers, including those from the EU, EEA, and Switzerland. Applications for this group will open from 5 March 2025.
What This Means for Travellers
The ETA system aligns the UK with other countries requiring pre-travel authorisation, such as the United States ESTA and Canada eTA. Travellers should ensure they have the correct authorisation before their journey to avoid delays or being denied boarding.
Employers and businesses that regularly send employees to the UK should also consider this when planning travel.
For those who have not yet applied, now is the time to check whether an ETA is required and complete the application as soon as possible.
