How to Apply for an Unmarried Partner Visa in the UK

The prerequisites for securing a UK unmarried partner visa are specific. Given the limited leeway for discretion by the UKVI Entry Clearance Officer (ECO), the unmarried partner visa applications must be prepared accurately and thoroughly. Be aware that the specifications for the UK unmarried visa may differ based on whether your application is submitted within the UK or from an overseas location.

  • You and your unmarried partner must be 18 years old or over.
  • You must have met each other.
  • You must plan to live together permanently.
  • Your unmarried partner is either present and settled in the United Kingdom (British Citizen or holds ILR) or will arrive with you to be admitted for settlement.
  • Adequate accommodation was arranged for you and any dependents, and you can maintain yourselves and any dependents without the need for UK public funds.
  • Your partner earns more than £18,600 (expected to increase to £29,000 in Spring 2024 and again to £38,700 "in due course") per year or has enough savings to be able to support you without claiming public funds. If you have dependent children, the minimum financial requirement is higher.
  • You must satisfy the English language requirement, Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
  • You and your unmarried partner must be 18 years old or over.
  • You must have met each other.
  • You must plan to live together permanently.
  • Your partner is present and settled in the United Kingdom (British Citizen or holds ILR).
  • Adequate accommodation was arranged for you and any dependents, and you can maintain yourselves and any dependents without the need for UK public funds.
  • Either you or your partner or the two of you combined earn more than £18,600 (expected to increase to £29,000 in Spring 2024 and again to £38,700 "in due course") per year or have enough savings to be able to support you without claiming public funds. If you have dependent children, the minimum financial requirement is higher. 
  • You must satisfy the English language requirement, Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) if switching from another visa type or Level A2 if applying to extend an initial 33-month visa granted in the same category.

FAQs

If approved, initial unmarried partner visas are usually granted for 33 months, with an extension of usually 24 months required to be submitted from within the UK.

Following five years of continuous residence as an unmarried spouse, you may qualify for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK, effectively permanent residence, providing all the requirements are met at that time.

Children under 18 may apply for a UK visa to accompany their parents as dependants. They may apply for their visas simultaneously as the parent applying for a UK unmarried partner visa.

It is possible to apply to switch visa category from within the UK into this visa type if you are not currently in the UK holding one of the following visa types:

UKVI aim to process unmarried partner visas as follows:

Visa applications submitted outside of the UK:

  • Standard processing: 90 working days
  • Priority Service processing: 30 working days

Visa applications submitted inside the UK:

  • Standard processing: 8 weeks
  • Super Priority Service processing: 1 working day

Important: UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) does not guarantee processing times, and delays do occur. We advise that you only book non-refundable travel once your visa has been approved and your work visa is in your possession.  Priority services can be suspended without notice and may not be available during application.

The UKVI application fee for an unmarried partner visa is £1,846 if applying outside the UK or £1,048 from within the UK.  In addition, you will need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which is £1,560, to cover the 33-month visa duration.
