Navigating the UK Marriage Visitor Visa Process

Understanding the UK marriage visitor visa process is essential for ensuring a successful application. Applicants must demonstrate a genuine intention to marry or enter a civil partnership in the UK within six months of arrival. Also, applicants must prove their intention to leave the UK at the end of their visit and have sufficient funds to cover their stay.

Supporting Documents for Marriage Visitor Visa UK

Applicants need to provide several supporting documents to apply for a marriage visitor visa in the UK. These include proof of wedding or civil partnership arrangements, financial documents demonstrating you can help yourself, and evidence of your plans with your spouse. Preparing these documents carefully is crucial, as complete or correct information can lead to application rejection.

As a UK marriage visa applicant, you must demonstrate that you have a genuine reason for visiting the UK, can maintain and accommodate yourself during the visit and have sufficient ties to your home country to show the authorities that you intend to leave the UK. You should provide evidence of the relationship with your intended spouse/civil partner. Although a third party may sponsor you, the Entry Clearance Officers (ECOs) will consider your circumstances too.

UK marriage visit visas are typically issued with a validity period of 6 months and are valid for multiple entries to the UK whilst valid.

The maximum time to stay in the UK at any time is six months. Marriage visits must, however, not lead to living in the UK through frequent and successive visits. As a starting point, the individual should not spend more than six months in the UK in any rolling 12-month period, although this is a guide only and not stated in the immigration rules. The Immigration Officer at the port of entry has the authority to assess the individual’s intentions, which can lead to marriage visitor visas being cancelled and entry to the UK being refused.

It is not possible to add dependant family members to a UK marriage visa application.  However, they may submit their own application, which will usually be processed at the same time as the ‘main applicant’.

All applications submitted in accordance with the UK Standard Visitor Rules must be made from outside of the UK.

UKVI aim to process marriage visit visas as follows:

Visa applications submitted outside of the UK:

  • Standard processing: 15 working days
  • Priority Service processing: 5 working days

Important: UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) does not guarantee processing times, and delays do occur. We advise that you only book non-refundable travel once your visa has been approved and your work visa is in your possession.  Priority services can be suspended without notice and may not be available during application.

The UKVI application fee is as follows:

  • Up to 6 months: £115

Our professional fee will depend on the level of service you require.
