Temporary Worker Religious – UK Work Visa Guide

For those of you considering work in the UK in a religious capacity, the UK Temporary Worker Religious visa is an excellent pathway. This visa permits you to live and work in the UK for a religious organisation, whether you are a minister of religion, missionary or a member of a religious order.

What is a Temporary Worker Religious Visa?

The UK Temporary Worker Religious visa allows non-British and Irish individuals to undertake religious work in the UK. This could involve preaching, pastoral work, or a role within a religious order. If you’ve got a confirmed job offer from a licensed religious organisation in the UK, you might be eligible to apply.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants for the Temporary Worker Religious visa should have a job offer from a religious organisation in the UK that holds a valid applicable Home Office sponsorship license. The offer must detail that the work meets the organisation’s requirements for a religious worker.

Benefits of Applying

A UK Temporary Worker Religious visa allows you to stay in the UK for up to 24 months, or the time given on your certificate of sponsorship plus 28 days, whichever is shorter. You can extend this visa for up to 2 years, giving you ample time to contribute to your religious organisation in the UK.

Unpacking the Key Criteria for the Religious Temporary Worker Visa

Navigating the path towards a successful visa application can be daunting. Here, we break down the essential requirements for a Religious Temporary Worker visa. The following points serve as a roadmap, guiding you through the fundamental prerequisites that must be met for a successful visa application:

You must obtain sponsorship from an employer registered as Home Office sponsor. Upon sponsorship, you will be issued with a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), this is like an online UK work permit
You must have held £1,270 in savings for 28 days prior to the date of application, or an A-Rated Home Office sponsor may certify that they will provide this on the CoS. Further funds must be held for each dependant family member applying

Understanding the Application Process

The application process for a Temporary Worker Religious visa involves various stages, including the acquisition of a Certificate of Sponsorship from the UK religious organisation. Immtell’s experienced consultants can guide you through each stage of the process, ensuring a smooth journey towards your UK work visa.

Initial Religious Temporary Worker visa work visas granted outside of the UK are usually for either up to 2 years or the period stated on the Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), whichever is shorter.

If sponsorship continues, it is possible to apply for an extension up to the maximum time of 2 years in the UK.

Unfortunately it is not permitted to switch into this temporary work category from within the UK.

Unfortunately, the Religious Temporary Worker visa does not lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK.  Following the maximum time permitted in the UK, you will usually be required to leave the country.

Spouses or partners and children under the age of 18 may apply for visas to accompany you to the UK as your ‘dependants’.  Your spouse or partner should be permitted to work.

Initial applications must be made from abroad, either from your country of nationality or legal residence. It is not permitted to switch into the Religious Temporary Worker visa from within the UK.

UKVI aim to process visas as follows:

Visa applications submitted outside of the UK:

  • Standard processing: 15 working days
  • Priority Service processing: 5 working days

Visa applications submitted inside the UK:

  • Standard processing: 8 weeks
  • Priority Service processing: 5 working day

Important: UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) do not guarantee processing times and delays do occur. We advise that you do not book any non refundable travel until your visa has been approved and your work visa is in your possession.  Priority services can be suspended without notice and may not be available at the time of application.

The UKVI application fee is £259.  In addition, you will need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) which is £624 per year of the visa duration.

Our professional fee will depend on the level of service you require. Please see the options below or contact us for further information.
