Understanding the UK Medical Visa Requirements

Understanding the UK Medical Visa requirements is paramount to a successful application. Here is what you need to know:

  • A detailed treatment plan: You need to present a comprehensive treatment plan from your UK-based doctor. This should outline the purpose of your visit and the expected duration and cost of the treatment.
  • Proof of financial capacity: You’ll need to demonstrate that you have enough funds to cover all your medical costs, as well as any living expenses during your stay in the UK.
  • Intention to leave: The UK authorities will want assurance that you intend to return home once your treatment is finished. This can be evidenced through ties to your home country like employment, family, or property.

Navigating the application process can be a complex task. That’s where our expert team at Immtell comes in. We’re committed to providing clarity on the visa requirements, helping you compile all necessary documentation, and assisting you in navigating the UK Medical Visa application process.

FAQs

There are specific requirements which must be met in order to satisfy the Entry Clearance Officer (ECO) that applicants qualify for a UK medical visit visa.  Documents to be provided include letters from the private medical doctor in the UK confirming the purpose, duration and cost of the treatment and where possible a letter from your doctor in the applicant’s home country.

As a medical visa applicant, you must be able to demonstrate that you have a genuine reason for visiting the UK, can maintain and accommodate yourself during the visit and have sufficient ties to your home country to show the authorities that you have an intention to leave the UK. Although you may be sponsored by a third party, the Entry Clearance Officers (ECOs) will consider your own personal circumstances too

UK medical visitor visas are usually valid for either 6 or 11 months depending on the duration applied for and medical treatment to be undertaken in the UK. Medical visit visas are usually valid for multiple entries to the UK.

If you need to extend your medical treatment in the UK, you may apply for an extension of your visa of 6 months at a time. There is no official limit on the number of extensions you may apply for, however UKVI do have the discretion to refuse extension applications.

It is not possible to add dependant family members to a UK medical visa application.  However, they may submit their own application which will usually be processed at the same time as the ‘main applicant’.

All applications submitted in accordance with the UK Standard Visitor Rules must be made from outside of the UK.

UKVI aim to process medical visit visas as follows:

Visa applications submitted outside of the UK:

  • Standard processing: 15 working days
  • Priority Service processing: 5 working days

Important: UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) do not guarantee processing times and delays do occur. We advise that you do not book any non refundable travel until your visa has been approved and your work visa is in your possession.  Priority services can be suspended without notice and may not be available at the time of application.

The UKVI application fees are as follows:

  • Initial visa for up to 6 or 11 months: £200
  • In-country 6 month visa extension: £1,000
